Can Drug Use by the Male Cause Birth Defects?

Question by Amanda: Can drug use by the male cause birth defects?
My husband and i are expecting our first child. I am extremely excited but I began thinking a lot about what is to come for the baby. My husband has been a heavy drinker for the past 6 or 7 years. He drinks at least every weekend, has one or 2 beers a night. Its an addiction we’ve been trying to stop, and he is now only drinking twice a week, although when the baby was conceived a few months ago, he was still drinking a lot and had done pot and acid also (but not much).
I am a little worried as to how such drug abuse effects the sperm. I know a mother’s drug abuse can greatly effect a baby’s health, but what about the male? Ive heard it usually just lowers fertility, but does it cause any birth defects?

Well I think you need to RETHINK things with your husband. This does not sound like a good father for your baby, and you would not be a very good mother to let this child grow up around this problematic person. Drugs are illegal, and alcohol addiction is scary. Is this something you want your child to see at 2? I do not think so. As for the sperm, no it can not travel through the sperm. If that was the case, a lot more babies would be born with birth defects and abnormalities than we normally see.

One or two beers a night isn’t heavy drinking. The National Health service says males shouldn’t be drinking more than 3-4 units per day. One beer constitutes as 2 units. Therefore he’s still within healthy limits.
