Brain, mind, and body are all different aspects of one whole person. They cannot be separated. The impression we have that they are different “things” is the illusion. You can think of a stressful thing and your heart rate goes up. Your adrenal glands produce stress hormones that will make your mood agitated or depressed. Your mood will then affect your thoughts. What you think about will affect your mood. They cannot be separated.

But addiction clearly has strong biological causes. A strong genetic component to addiction has been unequivocally proven by twin studies, for example. A whole bunch of different genes either add to susceptibility or confer some resistance.

Still, one of the strongest predictors of addiction is childhood emotional trauma. Everything affects everything else inside us.

Which is why addiction is best treated by a combination of approaches that include individual psychology, social setting (hang out with sober people), and often medication to control cravings or to treat mental disorders.

Addiction is a compulsion. It is almost exactly like the eating disorders of anorexia and bulimia, except the eating disorders do not involve external chemical substances.
