Why Oh Why Most Doctors Continually Over Prescribed Their Patients?

Question by Matthew Perkins: Why oh why most doctors continually over prescribed their patients?
First of all on December 7, 2010 I lost a very good friend of mine that froze to death. So as you can imagine I was a little bit depressed. Don’t get me wrong I wasn’t suicidal by any means, but I was sad and I missed my friend. Also the way in which my friend died it had to be extremely horrible and painful which haunts me to this day. I am a Christian however, and the good news is that the Lord used me as a tool to lead my friend just four weeks before his passing to find and to know Christ.
Anyway, I don’t have health insurance since I’m back in school full-time am 33 years old and I really needed to see a doctor so they sent me to the Abby Center here in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I went to see one of their specialist either a psychologist or psychiatrist whichever one can prescribe pills and I spoke with the man for approximately 5 min. I told him that in the past I have abused Xanax but that was when I was in my early 20s. I suffered major complications to a stomach surgery and that I will would no longer abuse Xanax again. Believe it or not I kept my word and I never did abuse them again. I didn’t want to find myself in that mess again. I told him about my friends passing and that I could use some Prozac or something on those lines as well as some Xanax for emergency purposes. I also mentioned that I had no insurance and I would prefer samples. Unfortunately, Xanax don’t come in samples so he said he would have to write me a prescription. He then said, “I will be right back. The samples are down the hall. Let’s see what we have shall we?” Within 5 minutes this doctor returned with a bunch of Cymbalta, which is like Prozac. He wanted me to take hundred and 20 mg of that perfect day him. I also told him I was having trouble studying in school since my friend had passed so he wrote me out a prescription right then and there for 70 mg of Adderall each and every day. And let’s not forget the Xanax. On the Xanax he wrote me a prescription for 90 1mg pills per month to use as needed. I also mentioned to them that I was losing my hair and my self-confidence was well, let’s put it this way, “a lion needs his main!” So Dr. know it all prescribed me three months worth of Propecia for hair loss. Which by the way I was quite happy above actually. Then he prescribed me Zolpindem Tartrate 10mg pills to help me sleep in the evening because he saw in my charts and realized I had trouble sleeping. like the Xanax one be enough? Now not sure how many drugs were up to yet, the kicker is she also wanted me to take Neurontin perhaps as a nighptcap I don’t know? In fact I still really don’t know what it is. I do know when my mother had her knee transplant they gave her 25 mg of that particular drug as well as her usual dose of OxyContin. This Dr. wanted me start off the first day taking 300 mg and work by way of two 1200 mg within the first week. Now remember I just met this Dr. We spoke for approximately 5 min. I even told him that I have been taking methadone for the last three years of my life because of an addiction to pain pills and Xanax. Yet it didn’t seem to bother this Dr. one bit.

I guess my real question is do you think this Dr. step away way out of line by giving me all of these drugs when he in fact knew I was depressed, and then on top of that I told him that I was an addict to Xanax at one time in my life and that I am currently on methadone because of pain pill addictions of the opiate variety? I guess you all tell me what you think. Do you think I have a medical malpractice suit I hand.

It’s almost as if he tried to kill me by giving me all of these pills. Please let me know what you think? Remember Jesus loves all of you so good night and God bless each and everyone of you.

Why on earth would you want to sue your doctor? You claim to be a Christian–I don’t think that is what Jesus would do.. Just because a specialist prescribes pills does not mean you have to use all of them! Use the Xanax for panic like the label says–don’t abuse it. The Adderall should help you allot in staying on focus through the haze of methadone(you didn’t say how much of that you’re on but I’ll guess its about 40mg/day. The Cymbalta is a long term stabilizer and you may or may not need to stay on it long term. Sleeping pills–well take if you need them but i doubt you do. Propecia really is more of a placebo than anything else and really is a waste of money.Neurontin or Gabapentin is prescribed for every little thing under the sun right now and has been proven very useful in psychiatric trauma–but again if you feel well with out it then don’t take it.
The bottom line is people see psychiatrists to get medications and that is what she did. So be grateful she tried to help you instead of accusing you of drug seeking and kicking you to the street. Best Wishes.

If this did actually occur as you described I would be reporting the Dr to the Medical Board.
