Would I Get Laughed Out of Rehab? (Ps: This Is No Bobby and Whitey Nonsense)?

Question by Atheist Nun aka GenaneF: Would I get laughed out of rehab? (ps: This is no Bobby and Whitey nonsense)?
I think I have a problem, and NO it’s not alcohol, crack, coke, weed, meth, heroin_____insert street drug here. A while back 3.5 years ago, I injured ny hip very badly, broke it in two places. I am on pain meds for the rest of my life my doc says, but nothing too outrageous right now (I get hydrocodone, carisporodol and sometimes oxycodone). Thing is, the crap is not really working anymore. I feel like some dopehead for taking one extra pill than directed to help me get some rest at night. I tell my doc this too. He thinks we need to add “celebrex” to my regimen…the same crap my grandmother had a small heart attack from 2 years back. No way. So, does Tai Chi, yoga, and subtle martial art help a person in my condition? I do not have a full range of motion. I get prescribed 120 10/325 (4x day) watsons each month, and he’s considering bumping it up to 180 (6x day) *if* I try the celebrex. No way am I taking that crap. So I have just been suffering 2 days on with no meds except carisporodol, then on my “good” days, I get the relief I need by taking 2 hydros every 4 hours. I know I will hurt for the rest of my life, but how these doctors treat us is insane. I am not a crackhead. I am a war vet who got injured and not I am being left to dry because some dopeheads made it hard for legitimate pain patients to get help. I guess I should consider myself lucky…at least the VA hasn’t offered me Prozac…yet.

The rehab query…since I am taking the meds as I need them according to my pain, does that qualify me for being a drug abuser? Can they help the doctors work with me and since they know my issue is real? You can see it on MRI and Xray. I’m tired of hurting and I don’t know what else to do. VA patients know what I am talking about. They see so many fakers, everyone gets treated like a faker.

Just remember something- addiction is NOT prejudice. People go to rehab for EVERYTHING. If you have a problem with pills, you can go, but your best bet is to go to a pain doctor for medication management. We have many patients we slowly ween of their meds. There are also addictionologists we send out patients too. There are a lot of options for you. And if you pain is still bad, they can treat it as well. They can do possible injections, send you to PT, etc….

Going to rehab means quitting drugs, not trying to get more…..and plenty of people who take meds for pain become addicted. One of the reasons they try to keep you off as many opiates as possible is to a) prevent tolerance (so the med stays effective) and b) prevent addiction (tolerance is a symptom of addiction)

If I were you, I would remain open minded to the options you doctor has presented. That “crap” medication your grandma took was an anti -inflammatory which makes the opiates you are taking more effective – and antidepressants help to desensitize the portions of the brain that register pain….

Dismissing all meds that aren’t opiates reeks of drug seeking behavior….just saying…

And yes, Tai Chi and Yoga can help….It helped me rehab after an accident. There are special classes for people with range of motion issues. The arthritis foundation can actually help you find one near you. But just in case, ask your doc – he should be able to tell you which poses to avoid.
