The last article I have posted is your answer. I did find quite a bit other information about cataracts while I was looking, which I’ve included here:

VIT C AND COQ10
Supplemental Vitamin C and CoQ10 reduce cataracts by 77%

SKQ1
Imagine a pill that you could take every day that would extend your by years and keep you healthy for longer. You’d probably pay a lot for such a pill. Vladimir Skulachev looks like he is getting close to selling it to you. The Russian biochemist is the head of the Bioenergetics Department at Moscow State University and has been working on the problem of aging for 40 years. His cure is an anti-oxidant that he claims extends median lifespan and (if you’ll believe it) removed a cataract from his eye. Skulachev hasn’t directly announced the formula for his ‘cure for aging’ compound. It is likely a derivative (or reproduction) of an earlier anti-oxidant substance called SKQ1. In earlier work Skulachev showed that SKQ1 could penetrate into mitochondria and affect oxidants (most antioxidants, including the ones in your health supplements, do not enter mitochondria in dose amounts).

N-ACETYLCARNOSINE
In a new report, HPLC analysis was used to search the pathways of ocular metabolic activities for a 1% N-acetylcarnosine eye drop solution and the bioactivation of this molecule for the promotion of transcorneal uptake of L-carnosine in the aqueous humor.1 When a meta-analysis of phase 2 of a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial data was conducted, the intraocularly absorbed L-carnosine demonstrated a number of pharmacological mechanisms for the prevention and reversal of cataracts. The systemic absorption of L-carnosine results in hypothalamic activation that regulates neuronal functions such as the promotion of sensory input in the primary vision perceptual pathway. The discovery of naturally-occurring carnosine derivatives such as N-acetylcarnosine have been found to be an effective treatment for sight-threatening eye disorders.

There has been some very promising research out of Russia that I have been following for the last few years in relation to cataract treatment. Dr. Mark Babizhayev and his colleagues at the Helmholtz Eye Institute in Moscow have been studying the effects of the natural compound N-Acetyl-Carnosine. Dr Babizhayev has discovered that he has been able to prevent cataract formation by applying a 1-percent liquid solution of NAC directly to the eye. Even better news is that his eye drops have actually reduced and eliminated age-related cataracts. These results have all been accomplished without surgery or drugs.

CALPAIN INHIBITOR
Developers of the world’s first drug that prevents cataract are now set to test it on humans after animal trials proved it can slow down clouding of the eye’s lens.

The still unnamed drug developed by a team led by Prof. Andrew Abell of the University of Adelaide may eliminate the need for surgical removal of cataracts, which threaten to blind about 1.5 million Australians. Worldwide, 18 million people are blind from cataract, according to the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness.

“By using the drug early, you could slow their (cataract) development so much it would not actually develop,” Adeaidenow.com quoted Abell as saying. “We believe we can delay the need for surgery for a number of years to the point where people may never need surgery.”

More than 200,000 cataract operations are performed in Australia every year.

In 2005, Abell and researchers from New Zealand’s University of Canterbury identified the protein calpain as the culprit in the growth of cataract, which prevents light from passing through the lens.

Calpain breaks down the major lens protein called crystallins. By inhibiting calpain activity, cataract formation is prevented. The calpain inhibitor, according to the report, would take the form of drops or cream to be placed in the eye each night before bed.
